Music

The Music Ministry of West University United Methodist Church invites you to join us as we seek to serve God and God's people with excellence in Music and the Arts. West University offers many opportunities for children, youth, and adults to utilize their God-given gift of musical and artistic talents.  Each group welcomes new members; the only requirement is a commitment to regular rehearsals and service attendance.

Wedding Music
Music is a very important part of a wedding and should reflect a service of worship. Sacred music or classical music may be played or sung at weddings performed at West U. Popular ballads, love songs, or recorded music is not permitted. The Organist of West U will decide the appropriateness of the service music.  The church Organist plays all services, unless unavailable. In such case, the Organist will provide a qualified substitute. Requests for ensembles and/or soloists should be made in advance tot he Organist  by one month. Soloists and instrumentalists should not be engaged until after conferring with the Organist. All soloists are required to know their music in advance of the rehearsal with the Organist and be able to provide music to the Organist in the key of which he/she will sing. Please contact the Director of Music Ministries, Lynne Jackson, at ljackson@westumethodist.org, or 713.664-8111 to arrange a meeting with the service organist no later than six weeks prior to the ceremony.

Christmas ALIVE
This is a West U tradition each December. This outdoor nativity drama, complete with animals, takes place on the church's front lawn. All church and community embers are encouraged to participate. Non-auditioned costumed rolls include youth shepherds (6th-12th grades), youth and adult shepherd choir, and children's choir (K-5th grades). Additional involvement is needed in set-up, costuming, seamstresses, greeters, wassail preparers and servers, etc. Those preferring to watch are invited to sip wassail and be drawn in by a simple production that beautifully portrays the joy of the season.
