Purpose

West U Methodist School, in coordination with West University Methodist Church,

is dedicated to providing a comprehensive educational foundation in the context of a Christian community.

West U Methodist School represents the Church to the greater community as a positive, nurturing,

affirming school that seeks to uphold the highest standards for the children and their parents.  We accept

all races, colors or ethnic origins and provide each child all the privileges, programs and activities offered

 in the school.

Philosophy

Our school is a carefully planned program for young children, ages 12 months-5 years. It is a full, happy, flexible,

open-minded program for children who are ready for many experiences.  Our programs are developmentally

appropriate with a focus on increasing self-awareness and self-esteem through play, learning centers, circle time,

and a wide variety of musical and artistic activities. Our children enjoy many forms of self-expression and find

satisfaction in the many things they are able to do.  A large variety of materials and manipulatives are available

for their ability levels.  With blocks, they design and build. They are encouraged to sing, to dance, to listen, and

to make music.  They learn to communicate with growing skill and confidence and to express their honest feelings.

Our teachers gently guide and encourage each child to strive for their highest ability through stimulation,

socialization, and creativity while supporting them with Christian faith and care. In addition to our fine academic

staff, we have instructors who teach motor skills, Spanish, music, and religion.

Goal

The school’s structure is designed to develop and enhance the whole child through the following areas:

Spiritual

  • to develop a knowledge of God’s Creation
  • to learn about God Himself
  • to begin to understand how God loves us

Social-Emotional

  • to develop a positive attitude about learning
  • to experience a sense of self-esteem
  • to exhibit a positive attitude towards life
  • to demonstrate cooperative, pro-social behavior
  • to develop a sense of autonomy
  • to acquire self-help skills

Physical

  • to enhance gross motor skills (large motor)
  • to enhance and refine fine motor skills (wrist, finger, and  hand muscles)
  • to aid in the development of eye-hand coordination
  • to use all senses in learning

Cognitive

  • to acquire learning and problem-solving skills
  • to expand logical thinking skills
  • to expand creative and imaginative abilities through make-believe play, art and music
  • to expand verbal communication skills
  • to expose children to experiences that encourage pre-reading and pre-writing skills
  • to acquire math and science skills through exploration

Programs

West U Methodist School is a special ministry serving both parents and their young children.  Our weekday

program, led by our nurturing staff, offers gentle stimulation, socialization and creativity in a loving, Christian

atmosphere.

Nursery School: 12months-2 ˝ years

Our focus for Nursery School students is the development of self-awareness and self-esteem through play,

age-appropriate toys, and a wide variety of musical and visual stimuli. The young child regards himself or

herself as being the “center of the universe.” Our curriculum gradually introduces this very young child to

the outside world.  He or she gains independence and begins to trust others outside of their family.  Learning

how to listen, follow instructions, and think for one’s self all helps the attention span and self-confidence to

grow and mature.  A nurturing, secure environment is maintained at all times.  Teachers are patient and gentle

with these children and encourage them to use words to express their feelings. Special time is allotted at the

beginning of the day for individual play and exploration to help the child transfer from home to school.  As the

day progresses, group activities, fantasy play, manipulative play (blocks, beads, sorting, etc.), art, cooking, and

 story/song times are included.

Preschool:  2 ˝ -4 years

Our curriculum for the 3 and 4 year olds builds on the basics of our Nursery School curriculum.  Socialization

skills are stressed, i.e., sharing, taking turns, helping others, listening to others, and communicating with words

to express feelings.  The more these skills are developed, the more confident and responsible the child

becomes.  The child learns to love learning. Activities at this age are designed to help the child develop skills

and abilities which are precursors to reading, i.e., sorting, visual discrimination, classifying, grouping, labeling,

and sequencing objects of varying shapes, colors, and sizes.  At the same time, physical skills such as

irectionality and laterality are also developed as prerequisites to reading.  Teachers read quality stories and

rhymes to the children on a daily basis in order to help with language and vocabulary development.  A variety

of art experiences are presented on a daily basis.  Math readiness and an understanding of numbers are

introduced by manipulation of balls, blocks, beads, pegs, and other objects.  Children learn the concept of

one-to-one correspondence by helping pass out materials for work and art and setting the table for snack

and lunch.

Pre- Kindergarten: 4-5 years

We recognize that Pre-Kindergarten level children are more similar to 3 and 4 year olds in development than

they are to first graders.  They still need time for play and free choice of activities.  They now move confidently

about the classroom and its learning centers figuring out for themselves how things work, interacting with others,

trying out new roles, experimenting, and questioning.  It is the teacher’s role to supervise and guide the children

through this important year. The curriculum provides numerous manipulative materials and experiences

designed

to support, challenge and stimulate pre-writing skills, attention span, social skills, and communication skills.

Special attention is paid to problem solving and conceptual skills.  Children are also encouraged to “write”

their own stories, and we use art materials to enhance creative expression and development.

Enrichment Classes

Motor Skills

At West U Methodist School we feel that gross motor skills develop a child’s mental picture of himself or

herself.  We work on developing the child’s awareness, sense of balance, flexibility, hand-eye and foot-eye

coordination, laterality and directionality in their body movements.

The children are also introduced to the early concepts of why and how their bodies work and how to keep them

healthy.  Available to:  Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten classes

Music

Our music program strives to offer a love of music through musical awareness, discovery, and development

of singing voice, establishment of feeling inner pulse (beat), listening skills, special awareness, and

language development through rhythmic rhymes.  Children will also learn musical concepts such as

high-low, loud-soft, fast-slow, long-short, and up-down.  They will be introduced to the instruments of the

orchestra and will learn an appreciation of classical music.  A development of hand-eye coordination is

achieved through playing rhythm and melody instruments.   Available to:  all classes

Chapel

The children’s ministries of West U Methodist School have a deep desire to plant the seed of faith in the

hearts of children.

Let my teaching fall like rain on tender plants.  Deuteronomy 32:2.

Our weekly chapel service is a continuation of our commitment to nourish these “seedlings” with love so

that children have strong, deeply rooted faith in God.  God’s work will be shared with your child through

songs, finger-play, puppets, storytelling, and prayer. Available to:  Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten

West U Children’s Ministries offers an open door for your child to join

in the many children’s activities offered throughout the year.

Spanish

Spanish language instruction consists of one class per week for Preschool and Pre-K classes.  The goals

of the class are to expose the children to the sounds and rhythms of Spanish.  This is accomplished through

active participation in games, songs, rhymes, repetitions and other creative activities.  Instructions are

given in simple Spanish in order to create a total immersion experience.  The children learn basic

vocabulary such as numbers, greetings, colors and commands in a fun, active and natural environment.

Available to:  Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten.

  • If lack of tuition payment exceeds two months, the circumstances must be presented to the School

Board.  The child will not be able to attend the school until the School Board meets or the tuition

is paid.  In the interim period there is a risk that the child’s place at the school may be given to another child.

  • If it is necessary to withdraw a child, the parents should inform the Director at least four weeks

before the date of withdrawal.

Electric Funds Transfer (EFT)

  • We encourage families to pay their tuition through Electronic Funds Transfer.  Please contact

the registrar for details to set up this form of payment.

Medical Records

  • Your child must have a current medical form signed by his or her physician stating that he or

She is in good health and has received necessary immunizations.  Immunization requirements

defined by the Texas Department of Health Services can be viewed at www.tdh.state.tx.us/immunize

or  through your pediatrician.  Parents must bring updated immunization records to school office

 following annual checkups.

  • Our regional Texas Department of Health does not require our children to have TB testing.
  • Authorization for Emergency Treatment card must be on file for every child.  This is required statement

signed by the parents authorizing a doctor to administer emergency treatment if the parents cannot

be reached.

Vision and Hearing Screening

  • All children three years and older (as of September 1st) are required to be screened annually for

vision and hearing.  Parent permission will be included on the release form on last page.

Speech evaluation screening is also available at an additional cost to our families.  Early

identification of hearing, vision, and speech problems is important to your child’s development.

All screening is performed by Lacey Caldwell and Associates, Memorial Speech and Language.

  •  Children and their family will be given an opportunity to visit the teachers and rooms before

school starts.  This will be a time for the children to meet the teachers and classmates prior

to the first day of school.  Teachers will mail your invitation to our Open House as well as

contact you by phone to discuss any questions you may have prior to Open House.

  • A parent orientation night will be held the first Tuesday in September to answer questions

you may have about the school programs and classrooms.  This is an event for parents only.  Childcare

 will not be provided.

Extended Day

  • Parents are expected to pick up their child by 2:00 p.m.  If you know that you are going to be

delayed, please notify the school immediately so that we can reassure your child and inform their

teachers to place them in Extended Day.

  • Extended hours are available from 8 am – 9 am and from 2 pm – 3 pm at a cost of $8.00 per session.

Welcome to School

What to bring to school

  • Each teacher will inform you of the specific needs for your child’s class at Parent Orientation.

Please label all items clearly.

  • All children should have a change of clothes in case of a possible accident, even in the Preschool

& PK programs.

  • A small blanket for rest time can be left at school.  Younger children may bring a “lovey” for

rest time.

What not to bring to school

  • Toys from home except for rest time “lovey” or special show and tell.  Toys from home are easily

lost and are difficult to share with others.

  • Money, coins, or good jewelry.
  • Any toy guns, toy swords or knives, war toys, or toys of destruction.

Clothing

  • The activities in which your child will be involved require comfortable clothing.  Children

should be dressed so they can sit on the floor, paint, or participate in messy activities.  We

require tennis shoes or other rubber-soled shoes with straps, ties or Velcro.  For safety reasons,

boots, flip flops and Crocs are not permitted at school.

  • Weather permitting, children will have outdoor play and should dress accordingly.
  • Please label all articles of clothing and nap items that are brought to school.
  • The school will not be responsible for any loss or damage to any article of clothing.

Food

  • Children will bring their own lunches from home.  Toddlers and Twos should bring “finger foods”

so they can feed themselves.  No refrigeration or microwaves are available for the children’s lunches.

  • To reduce the danger of choking, children under 3 are to avoid bringing hotdogs, whole grapes,

peanuts, popcorn, or hard candies.

  • We will provide a light, morning snack for the children.
  • Nursery school classes are asked to bring an additional sippy cup or bottle of juice or water

for snack and playground time.

Birthdays

  • We delight in celebrating your child’s special day.  We ask that you please keep their school “party”

to a minimum with cookies or cupcakes and discuss your plan with their teacher prior to bringing

the special snack.  We ask that you save any party favors and/or outside entertainment to your

child’s birthday celebration away from the school.

Toilet Training

  • The goal at West U Methodist is to encourage children’s efforts in potty training and support

efforts at home toward successful potty training.  Discuss with your child’s teacher your progress at

home.

Walking Field Trips/ Special Programs

  • We provide several opportunities throughout the year when we bring educational programs

to our school. These can include musical, science and movement performances.  Bringing these

programs to our school gives many classes the opportunity to share in the experience. Due to

car seat regulations, we will not transport children for field trips.

  • During the school year various walking field trips are individually planned by Preschool

& Pre-kindergarten teachers for their students.  When this occurs, you will be notified and

you will be sent a permission slip to sign and return. Children must wear their class t-shirt when

going on field trips.

Early to arrive – Makes a child Happy and Wise

  • A positive attitude and enthusiasm from parents about school makes for an easy transition in the morning.
  • The time in the classroom is used as efficiently as possible by the teachers who have activities

ready to go at 9:00 a.m.  It is a time to gather, interact, and prepare for the day ahead.  In order to

insure your child’s successful drop-off and acclimation to school, it is critical that children are on

time to participate in this important part of the day. Just as you do not want to be late for an

appointment, neither does your child.  Even here you are your child’s role model and are already

establishing habits for the future.

  •  If you have any special instructions for the day, they should be written down in advance and handed

to the teacher at the door.

  • Please do not linger after telling your child good-bye.  If he/she is upset, the quicker you are out of sight,

the quicker he/she can be calmed.  If a child is crying in the morning, please call the office and we will

be happy to go check on your child.

  • If you arrive before 9:00 a.m., you will be asked to stay with your child outside the room until the

teacher is ready or take them to Extended Care where you will be charged an $8.00 drop in fee.

  • Children must always be left in the care of a staff member.

Thank you for your assistance in this area.  It may take a bit of effort on your part,

but your children will be the ones who benefit.

Discipline

The purpose of all “discipline” at West U Methodist School is to help children become increasingly

self-managing, and socially responsible.  Teachers help children express their feelings, cooperate with o

ther children, and negotiate conflicts.  At no time will a child be physically punished, threatened, or intimidated.

Techniques used at our school are:

1.                    Diverting attention to a constructive activity.

2.                  Compromising and negotiating differences.

3.                   Encouraging children to seek alternatives within the boundaries of their individual capabilities.

4.                  Supervised private time, away from the situation, to quiet him/her if the child needs help in

regaining his/ her self control.  Following the time away, a teacher will help the child re-enter the

classroom activity.

At the point when the problem behavior becomes more frequent, severe and/or results in injury to the child

or his/her classmates, the school will contact the parents for a conference and work together to find a

solution in an agreed amount of time.  When a classroom environment becomes unsafe or unpredictable

for the children or staff, the school must intervene and take the necessary steps to bring about safety.

If the efforts of both the parents and the school are unable to change the behavior during the allotted time,

the school will meet with the parents and will offer the following recommendations:

1.                    Seek outside intervention with a professional who may offer additional recommendations to

both the school and the family.

2.                  Reduce the amount of hours/days the child is in our school to receive outside intervention and

target the behavior.

3.                   Withdraw their child on a temporary basis until the inappropriate behavior is under control

(the child’s place in the school would be kept open for a specified time).

4.                  Permanently withdraw their child from the facility and place their child in another setting

more applicable to his/her needs.

Although every effort will be made to avoid termination, West U Methodist School reserves the right to

dismiss any child who is frequently:

  • disruptive to the learning process in the classroom.
  • destructive to the classroom, classmates, teachers, or himself/herself.
  • causing deliberate bodily injury to his/her classmates, teachers, or himself/herself.
  • using  abusive language.
  •  referred to the Director repeatedly without positive results
  • in need of individual assistance or additional care which can not be provided in our school setting.

Biting Policy

Unfortunately, at some time during the year, your toddler may come home with “teeth marks” on his/ her body.

Biting can be a scary incident and every effort is made by teachers to watch children carefully so that biting

does not occur.  However, when young children do not have the verbal skills necessary to communicate their

feelings, they often lash out at the nearest person, whether that person is the cause of the frustration or not.

Fortunately, this should be a short, passing phase and only warrants concern if it continues.

When a biting incident occurs in a room of children younger than 4 years of age, both children are dealt with

by the teachers and the following steps are taken:

1.      The biter is told firmly, “No biting, that hurts” and is separated from the other child.  The victim is

consoled and any medical attention needed is given.  Any biting incident will be reported in writing

and verbally to the parents of both children.

2.      If a second bite occurs, there will be a parent meeting with teachers and a plan of action will be established.

3.      If the behavior continues, the parents will be asked for the child to take a “short break” from school

(usually 2-3 weeks) to see if time away can solve the problem.

4.      If biting continues after the break, the family will be asked to leave our school.

Any biting incidents by children 4 years of age and above will be immediately referred to the school director

and result in a parent conference.  If the behavior occurs again, the child will be asked to leave our school.

Health

Illnesses

  • If there is any sign of a contagious disease, no child will be permitted at school.  If your child becomes

ill with a communicable disease, please let us know immediately so that we may notify other parents.

Your child’s health is a matter of major importance to us.  Precautions are taken at all times to

safeguard the health of the group.  This includes refusing to admit sick children into the class

and isolating children who become ill during school hours.

  • If a child is not well enough to play outside, he/she should be cared for at home.
  • Staff personnel will administer prescription medication for allergies, asthma, or non-contagious

conditions.  Medicine must be in its original container with the prescription number, child’s name and

dosage.

  • Parents should notify the school if their child is experiencing a traumatic emotional time as well

as if your child is absent for an extended period of time.

  • A sick child belongs at home when they are ill.

Allergies

  • Please notify the school if your child has a specific allergy.  A plan of action will be made between

the staff and family to help minimize your child’s exposure to specific allergens.

  • Epi Pens will only be administered at the written approval of the child’s pediatrician,

Accident Report/ Medical Emergencies

  • Minor accidents sometimes occur.  Parents will be notified of scrapes, bumps and bruises with an

accident form which will be sent home with your child.

  • Parents will be called immediately if an accident requires medical attention.  For serious injuries,

911 will be called immediately.  For injuries that do not require paramedics, the school will contact a

parent, or the child’s designated emergency contact person.  At the point no contact can be reached,

the school will seek medical attention for the child.  A detailed accident report will require a parents’

signature

  • It is very important to give the school office any updates on your phone number(s) in case of any

emergency.

Common Illnesses

A child must be kept at home under the following circumstances:

1. Fever higher than 100.4 degrees.  They must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

2.  Two or more diarrhea stools in a 24 hour period will be excluded until diarrhea free for 24 hours.

3. A heavy, constant non-clear nasal discharge not related to allergies or infection (determined by doctor).

4. Vomiting within the previous 24 hour period.

5. Constant cough or sore throat.

6. Live or dead lice/ nits (head lice).

7. A skin rash.

8. Fussy, cranky, and generally not him/herself

·       Please refer to the Common Childhood illnesses chart for symptoms and when children should stay at

home (see appendix).

·       Parents will be notified in writing of any communicable diseases in the classroom.

Communication and Involvement

Parent to Teacher

  • Get to know your child’s teacher. Look upon the teachers as a friend who wants to know all about

your child and feel free to discuss anything with them that will help them know him/her better.

Please confer with them if problems arise including any changes at home (new baby, death of a pet,

parent traveling, new house) so the teacher can help the child through these transitions.

  • Please give change of address and/or phone numbers immediately.  Also, let us know other

changes that should be made on your child’s record.

Teacher to Parent

  • Teachers will send home monthly calendars, weekly notes or post activities outside the classroom

to provide you with an insight to your child’s day.  Please check their cubbie daily for additional

information to be sent home.

  • A parent conference will be scheduled during the school year and on an as needed basis for specific

needs with the teacher and/ or the director.  Special problems or occurrences affecting a child

will be brought to the attention of the parents as needed.

Office to Parent

  • The school’s office staff is here to assist you and your child.  Feel free to drop by with any questions.

The key to a successful year is communication between staff and families.  An annual survey

also provides an opportunity for parental input.

  • Monthly school calendars will be sent home with school wide information and individual classroom

activities and skills to be taught.

Parent Volunteers

  • There are many opportunities throughout the year for parents to volunteer, either with special

events or in the classroom.  Check with your child’s teacher and sign up at Open House. A calendar

of yearly events will be included in your welcome packet.

Parent Education

  • Throughout the year, different workshops related to parenting and children will be made available to you.

We encourage your participation.

  • As a service to our families. Scholastic’s Parent & Child will be sent home quarterly.

Safety- In and Around School

Authorization to Pick Up

  • No child will be released to an unauthorized person.  Written consent by the parent is given to the

teacher or is filed in the office.  If the person authorized to pick up a child, but whom the teacher

does not know, the person will be sent to the office to verify their identity. Emergencies will be

handled by the Director on an individual basis.

  • All children must be signed in and out daily.  Sign in sheets are posted outside the classroom.

Parking Lot Safety

  • Your child’s safety is our number one concern.
  • PLEASE DO NOT TALK ON YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING ON THE PARKING LOT.
  • Please remember to DRIVE SAFELY in and out of parking lot.  Do NOT exceed 5 mph.  Please

do not block intersections (especially out back at the Activity Building) as this causes traffic problems.

  • Please do not park in the fire lane, even if you are just running in or dropping off.  This is a fire

violation and also blocks the driveway.

  • The parking lot can be very dangerous if special care while walking and driving is not observed.

All safety precautions must be taken.

  • Backing out of parking spaces is also very tricky because the parking lot is a small area.
  • Cross the parking lot with your child cautiously.  Children should be in hand and not cross alone.

Please keep car-pools small enough to control the children in the car.

Facility Safety

  • Please remember all children must be in the care of an adult, including siblings.  Never leave a child alone

anywhere on the property, including a classroom, playgrounds, hallway, bathroom or a vehicle.

  • Please take older children to class first.  With limited space and the possibility of disruption,

we ask that older children not enter toddler classes.

School Closure

  • In times of natural disaster, flooding, or icy conditions, the school may be closed.  In addition,

when H.I.S.D. closes due to bad weather, our school will close also.  For notification of

H.I.S.D. closings, please watch the news or call HISD 713-267-1704.  Parents will be contacted

immediately if an unsafe condition arises at school.  There will not be made up days for those missed

due to inclement weather.

Emergency Plans

  • Each class has an evacuation plan for fire and natural disasters.  These plans are practiced monthly.
  • In the case of city wide disaster the school will be on lock down, not allowing any persons in or out

until there has been an all clear given by the Emergency Broadcast System.
